David is a research-based videographer and photographer who unites an interest in research for transformative social and environmental change with a passion for visual media. With the intent of utilizing the strengths of both fields, his academic and work experience has been shaped by the desire to push at the frontiers of using audio-visual techniques to explore and understand social and environmental issues around the world. He obtained a collaborative PhD in Public Health and International Development from the University of Guelph. In collaboration with Labrador Inuit from Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut, his research focused on co-producing knowledge about the relationship between caribou and Inuit well-being, all through community-based documentary film. In support of this research, he holds a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Scholarship and a National Geographic Early Career Grant. Previously, he produced multimedia content for the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers in Malaysia, the Sustainable Agriculture Kit video series in Nepal, the Children of Bukati school feeding program in Kenya, and the first comprehensive How-To Beekeep video series in Canada. He published photos in the Photographer’s Forum Magazine, The Undercurrent Journal, and the iPolitics media agency, while also publishing written articles in various academic journals.
