Reg Garside



Reg Garside is an Australian gaffer. He has worked extensively within the camera and electrical department, progressing from roles such as best boy and electrician to becoming a highly experienced gaffer on major Australian and international productions. Garside began accumulating screen credits in the late 1970s and early 1980s, serving as gaffer on productions including Jack Winter's Dream (1979) and On the Road with Red Mole (1979). During the early 1980s, he worked in various capacities in the electrical department, including best boy on Manganinnie (1980) and Harlequin (1980), and as an electrician on Heatwave (1982). He was a gaffer on a wide range of Australian features in this period, such as BMX Bandits (1983), Careful, He Might Hear You (1983), and The Bounty (1984), on which he was credited as an electrician. His television work included Shout! – The Story of Johnny O'Keefe (1985), Winners (1985), and the Australian episode of Inspector Morse (1987). By the late 1980s and early 1990s, Garside was regularly credited as gaffer on both domestic and international productions filmed in Australia. His credits from this period include The Mosquito Coast (1986), Gorillas in the Mist(1988), The Punisher (1989), Strictly Ballroom (1992), and Lorenzo's Oil (1992). He continued to build his reputation through the 1990s with work on films such as Street Fighter (1994), Dark City (1998), and The Matrix (1999), on which he served as gaffer on the groundbreaking science fiction production. In the 2000s, Garside contributed to several major international films shot in Australia and New Zealand. He returned to the Matrix franchise on The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and in The Matrix Revolutions (2003). He also worked as a gaffer on Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005). He continued with a steady slate of feature films, including Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) and the HBO miniseries The Pacific (2010). His collaboration on large-scale productions with Peter Jackson continued with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). Garside's later credits include major studio features such as San Andreas (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), and Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019). He has also worked on Marvel Studios productions, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). He continued his work on large-scale action and adventure films with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Anaconda (2025), The Bluff (2026), and Mortal Kombat II (2026).
