Julius Kwan



Julius Kwan is an Animation Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), where he has worked since joining the studio in 2010. He began his tenure as an animator and progressed through senior and lead roles before being appointed Animation Supervisor in 2014. At Imageworks, he has contributed to a wide range of animated and live-action visual effects features, including The Smurfs (2011), Hotel Transylvania (2012) and Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015), Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Pixels (2015), Suicide Squad (2016), The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Smallfoot (2018), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), The Meg (2018), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Mulan (2020), The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021), Monster Pets: A Hotel Transylvania Short (2021), Love, Death + Robots: "In Vaulted Halls Entombed" (2022), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). His work includes participation in an Academy Award®–winning production and supervising large animation teams on major studio releases. Before joining Sony Pictures Imageworks, Kwan worked at Rainmaker Entertainment (now Mainframe Studios) in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he served in roles ranging from lead animator to senior animator. During this period, his credits included Escape from Planet Earth (2013) and Ratchet & Clank (2016), as well as extensive work on animated television and direct-to-video projects. Earlier in his career, he also worked as a CG artist on television promotions and commercials. Kwan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Calgary and later pursued specialised training in 3D Animation at Vancouver Film School. He has cited a lifelong interest in drawing, science fiction cinema, Japanese manga, and anime as formative influences. He has noted that seeing A Bug's Life (1998) was a pivotal moment that led him to pursue 3D animation professionally. Among the films he has identified as personal favourites are Aliens (1986), Jurassic Park (1993), and The Matrix (1999).
