Matteo Silvi is an Italian makeup artist. He comes from a family deeply rooted in cinema, with four generations dedicated to the craft of makeup for film. His great-grandfather began as an actor before moving into makeup, and his father, Maurizio Silvi, became one of Italy’s most celebrated makeup artists, earning international recognition with BAFTA wins and Oscar nominations. Growing up in this environment, Matteo was exposed to film sets from an early age. At just 17, he accompanied his father to Australia for work on Moulin Rouge! (2001), an experience that ignited his determination to follow in the family tradition, despite his father’s initial hesitation about his pursuing the same career path. Over the years, Matteo Silvi has established himself as a leading figure in makeup design and execution across major international productions. His career includes contributions to The Avengers (2012), Everest (2015), Spectre (2015), Men in Black: International (2019), and Hercules (2014). He has become exceptionally well known for his work with Marvel Studios, where he served as Italy Crowd Makeup Supervisor on Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), personal makeup artist to Chris Hemsworth in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and head of the makeup department for Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Beyond Marvel, he worked as a makeup designer for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel (2021), served as department head on Sam Hargrave’s Extraction (2020), where he created intricate prosthetics, wounds, and scars, and returned for Extraction 2 (2023). He was also the makeup designer for Stillwater (2021). He collaborated again with Chris Hemsworth as personal makeup designer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). Prestigious institutions have recognised Matteo Silvi’s work. He was nominated for the David di Donatello Award for Best Makeup in 2011 for Angel of Evil (2010), alongside Francesco Nardi. In 2016, he received a nomination at the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards for Best Contemporary Makeup for Youth (2015), shared with his father, Maurizio Silvi. In addition to his film work, Silvi is committed to education, teaching as an Associate Professor at the Accademia Nazionale del Cinema in Bologna. He is also represented by The Milton Agency, working globally across major productions. He is fluent in Italian, English, and Spanish.
